Clinches race seat with Arrows for the season but misses out when the squad is declared bankrupt. Tests for Renault, but a permanent seat fails to materialise and he heads to America to compete in Champ Cars, taking three wins in his debut season.

Fends off Giorgio Pantano and Tomas Enge to clinch the F3000 title with three wins and eight podium finishes. Tests for the Arrows Formula One team.
